Sapphire Gift Ideas For A September Birthday Girl

September is official here!  Which means if you haven’t already chosen that special gift for your September birthday girl, you still have time.  And what better way to celebrate, than by showering her with September’s precious birthstone, the sapphire, an extraordinary gemstone associated with wisdom, loyalty, mental clarity, and self-discipline.

Blue Sapphire Gemstone. Photo Credit: YAHOO

Known for it’s brilliant deep blue hue, the sapphire stone was historically popular among Christians in earlier biblical time.  As reported by the American Gem Society, early Christian kings cherished sapphire’s powers of protection by using it in ecclesiastical rings.  Furthermore, Ancient Hebrews believed that the Ten Commandments were engraved on tablets of sapphire (yet this theory was challenged by historians, who later believed the blue stone may have been lapis lazuli.)

Elegant 1.25 Cttw Blue Sapphire With Diamond Pendant Necklace In 14K White Gold, $749.99, SHOP NOW

The word sapphire is derived from the Latin word “saphirus” and Greek word, “sapheiros” meaning blue stone”.

But did you know sapphires can occur in a variety of colors?

Luxurious 0.69 Round Stackable Sapphire Ring In 14K White Gold, $199.99, SHOP NOW

It’s true…while many correlate the sapphire gemstone with a rich blue hue, according to the American Gem Society, the royal gem actually occurs in a rainbow of hues (except red) and any color other than blue are called “fancies.”  Just take a look at this beautifully hued stackable sapphire ring (pictured above). Perfect for the September girl looking to add some colorful fun to her jewelry collection.

But if the signature blue sapphire is what you have your mind set on, don’t worry we’ve got you covered – consider these graceful gift ideas:

Whether you’re looking to propose to the September birthday girl, celebrating a milestone 5th or 45th wedding anniversary, or just simply want to put a smile on her face with a symbol of love – choosing a sapphire is a great choice.  As many know, the sapphire became a symbol of royal love when Prince Charles gave Princess Diana a 12-carat blue sapphire engagement ring in 1981.  The same engagement ring was later given to Catherine Middleton when Prince William proposed in 2010.  If this doesn’t scream romantic, we don’t know what does!

GREEN WITH ENVY FOR THE AUGUST BIRTHSTONE

When it comes to monthly birthstones, it’s a bit difficult not to become ‘green with envy’ over the primary gemstone, peridot, which belongs to those born in the month of August. While the origin of this gem’s name is unknown, peridot is widely recognized by its spectacular lime-green glow and association with prosperity and good fortune.  Or you may have even heard peridot referred to as “the Evening Emerald” due to its sparkling green hue which appears brilliant any time of day.

Elegant Peridot & White Sapphire Pendant Necklace, $79.99, tulcy.com

So how does peridot achieve its beautiful green color, you wonder?  According to the American Gem Society, peridot’s signature green color comes from the composition of the mineral itself, rather than from trace impurities, as with many gems.  As a result, peridot is one of few stones that only comes in one color, yet shades may vary from yellowish-green to olive to brownish-green, depending how much iron is present.

Peridot Duet Halo Diamond Engagement Ring, $2055, tulcy.com

Where exactly does peridot come from?  Peridot is the rare gem-quality variety of the common mineral olivine, which forms deep inside the earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes.  The American Gem Society also estimates that about 80 to 95 percent of the world’s peridot supply is found on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona.  Although, other sources include China, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Africa.

Thanks to these easily accessible deposits, the modern demand for peridot’s can now be met effortlessly.  Therefore, if you’re shopping for a loved one born in August or maybe you’re planning to treat yourself to a unique birthday present to celebrate your month – do so knowing that there are plenty affordable options for adorning this elegant green birthstone.

HIS & HERS WEDDING BANDS

Today, when it comes to engagement rings or wedding bands, men and women can expect countless options.  But we must admit, there is something significantly special to be said about brides and grooms who choose to express their love with matching wedding bands, a symbolism that uniquely honors the couple’s marriage, love, and commitment to one another.

SO, WHAT EXACTLY ARE MATCHING WEDDING BANDS?

Matching wedding bands are those that soon-to-be newlyweds select together to align elements of both his and hers rings which often include the following:

DESIGN & STYLE –  One of the most classic, yet simple ways to match wedding bands is by selecting the same precious metal design such as platinum, 18K gold, white, yellow, rose, or palladium.  More complex details to decide upon are band design specifics like round or straight edges. You’re preference between a soft-matte finish, high-polished shine, or hammered textured finish. We could go on-and-on but just know that when it comes to agreeing upon matching designs, the decision can be as elaborate or subtle as you choose.

DETAILING:  Incorporating simple or intricate detailing to his and her bands can truly put the “finishing touches” on any design.  Popular detailing includes motifs such as antique scroll designs, a braid, or Celtic knots.  Adding diamonds or other gemstones to enhance the brilliance of his or hers bands is a great option too.

HIS Diamond Wedding Band

Not really sure you’re into matching wedding bands?  That’s okay too, you and your loved one can always coordinate wedding bands instead.  This way you can have a wedding band that is very similar, but doesn’t necessarily match.  For instance, you can switch up different aspects of detailing – maybe you choose the same precious metal for both bands, yet engrave a romantic phrase in the inside or outside of your bands in which the first half of it is engraved in one ring, and the second half engraved in the other.

HIS AND HERS ENGRAVED BANDS

Other exclusive ways to create coordinating his and her styles may be choosing your favorite gemstone for both rings, but feature them differently.  Her ring might feature a single gemstone, while his features gems across the band…You get the picture.

CUSTOMIZED WEDDING BANDS:  For those soon-to-be newlywed couples who want to express their love in an entirely exceptional way opting to customize your wedding bands with a jewelry expert will give you the best variety when it comes to unique designs, colored gemstones, specialized engravings your name on it.

Just remember, whatever ring choice you and your spouse decide upon, whether it be matching, coordinating, customized, or maybe you simply prefer individual styles – be sure you two absolutely love them, because it’s a symbol of love that you will wear ‘until the end of time’.

June Birthstone History: Pearl. Alexandrite. Moonstone

How lucky are those jewelry lovers born in June?  The month belongs to three historically distinct and beautiful birthstones – Alexandrite, Moonstone, and Pearl.  All three stones uniquely different; but the latter, the Pearl stone, being the most popular amongst them all for various appealing reasons.

So, whether your shopping for a June birthday girl or happen to be one yourself, be happy to know that you my friend have many options!  Come along with us as we explore the history of each June birthstone while giving you some great gift ideas too:

First, let’s discuss the Alexandrite gemstone, a precious and very rare chameleon-like gem discovered in emerald mines in Russia.  Alexandrite is known for its extraordinary ability to change colors under different light sources.  However according to the American Gem Association, because it’s so scarcely available, top quality alexandrite is practically unaffordable to the generic pubic (costing as much as $10,000 per carat).  As a result, even lower quality stones are expensive and limited in supply.

Example of a gorgeous and rare alexandrite ring.

Next, there’s the luminous Moonstone gem, named after Roman natural historian, Pliny, who coined the name with the belief that moonstones shimmery appearance shifted with the phases of the moon.  While different cultures like the Romans, Greeks, and Hindus believed the gem had its own influential meaning – moonstone has been used as a beautiful adornment and a powerful stone since ancient civilization.  Today moonstone is still very popular and accessible for purchase at reasonable cost.

Example of a moonstone necklace.

Then there are what most would call the most popular of the three birthstones, Pearls – known for their natural purity, innocence, and vintage design. Historically, pearls have been used as an adornment for centuries – dating back to ancient Greece, in which it was believed pearls were ‘tears of the gods’.  Ancient Japanese folktales believed pearls were created from the tears of mythical creatures, such as mermaids and nymphs.  While early Chinese civilization believed that dragons carried pearls between their teeth, and if killed to claim the pearls, wisdom was symbolized.  Other cultures associated pearls with ‘teardrops’ of the moon.’

Although commonly believed that pearls are made from a grain of sand – pearls are the only gemstones made by living creatures. Mollusks produce pearls by depositing layers of calcium carbonate around microscopic irritants that get lodged in their shells.  As a result,. natural pearls were so rare throughout history only the wealthy could afford them, until about the early 1900’s, when pearls became more accessible due to the first commercial culturing of saltwater pearls which took place in Asia.  Today, cultured pearls have almost completely replaced natural pearls in the market—making this vintage gemstone affordable for nearly any budget.

What’s Really Up With The Four C’s of Diamonds?

Cut. Clarity. Carat. Color- also known as The Four (important) C’s to focus on when purchasing a diamond.

Not only does each ‘C’ possess it’s own distinct quality, but learning the basics of The Four C’s is an absolute must – especially when deciding on a purchase that will cost you thousands of dollars!

So if you’re looking to pop the question with an engagement ring soon, or maybe you simply want to know a little bit more about diamonds – check out this quick blog post on The Four C’s of Diamonds:

CUT:  When it comes to the overall brilliance ( or the sparkly appearance) of a diamond, nothing is more important than how well proportioned a particular stone is cut.  You want to avoid a diamond in which the top or bottom is cut too deep or shallow, as these cuts can appear darker or not as brilliant.  Instead opt for a diamond with ideal symmetry, this will maximize brilliance – which will make your stone appear bright and radiant.

CLARITY: This refers to the amount of inclusions (internal flaws) or blemishes (external imperfections) a diamond has.  It’s important to know it’s not necessarily a bad thing if a diamond has ‘flaws’ because as you probably know – no two diamonds are the same – so think of these inclusions as your diamonds authentic signature.

At the end of the day when it boils down to clarity, remember that flawless diamonds are very rare (and more expensive), so don’t think your settling on a diamond just because you choose one with a lower clarity grade (this isn’t the case at all).  For more information on diamond clarity -check the guide below to see how the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) rates a diamonds clarity.

CARAT:  The most commonly understood “C” when referencing diamonds.  Carat simply denotes the weight of a diamond.

Contrary to popular belief, the carat alone does not determine a diamonds value (cut, color, and clarity also play a role).  However, it is true that the larger the diamond tends to weigh, the more expensive it tends to be (yet this statement is still subjective to the cut, color, and clarity of the diamond).

COLOR:  The color of a diamond is determined by comparing a diamonds hue to a set of “master” or authenticated stones.  Check below to see how the GIA rates color grading:

What to take away from this ‘C’ is – the more colorless or white a diamond is, the more rare.  More rare = More valuable.  So if you’re shopping in the D, E, or F category – we aren’t made at you!
CONCLUSION:  So there you have it – The Four C’s (Cut, Clarity, Carat, & Color). Remember all hold there importance when selecting your next diamond and shouldn’t be overlooked!  Still have questions regarding The Four C’s of Diamonds?  Contact the Tulcy Team at http://www.tulcy.com/contact-us.html or check out our Live Chat on our homepage.

Top 5 Diamond Earring Styles

Selecting a pair of diamond earrings can be such an exhilarating experience once you fall in love with the perfect style that suites you.  But let’s be honest, sometimes choosing that perfect style can be exhausting when you have so many options to choose from.  Don’t fret, the Tulcy Team is here to make your next diamond earring choice…the best choice…with everything you need to know about the Top 5 Diamond Earring Styles:

2. Solitaire:  Diamond solitaire earrings feature a single, or solitary diamond per earring – and its brilliance lies in the “Four C’s” – Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat Weight (we’ll be sure to detail the “Four C’s” in a future blog post).  Much like the stud style earring solitaire diamonds are eternal, allowing them to be worn daily or adorned for any special occasion.

3.  Dangling:  This graceful style of diamond earring falls beautifully from the earlobe. Choose a chandelier style to make a fashion statement at your next formal event or don’t be afraid to select a simpler style for everyday wear.

4.  Hoops:  Diamond hoop earrings are hands down not only very trendy, but with the right outfit they can bring together your entire style.  Take note from fashion forward celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Sofia Vergara – when it comes to rocking diamond hoop earrings they don’t miss a beat!

5.  Colored Diamonds – Black Stud:  While very popular amongst women – we love that men have taken over the unique black diamond earring trend. Thanks to celebrities like Justin Bieber, Reggie Bush, and Will Smith,  the idea that diamonds can only be classified as feminine has been put to rest.  These men have been known to wear colored diamonds…and they wear them well!
